Jonaki Cinema, Due to longer history, aesthetic achievements, and a track record of winning National Awards, the Assamese cinema industry has unable to chart a path to success. When Jyoti Prasad Agarwala premiered his film Joymoti in 1935, the business was born. Bhabendra Nath Saikia, Phani Sharma, Jahnu Barua, Munin Barua, and others have all made notable contributions to the business.
Munin broke the silence after a lengthy period of inactivity by producing back-to-back blockbusters Hiya Diya Niya and Nayak. The Assamese films were overshadowed by Bollywood and failed to appeal to the audience. The distributors and producers struggled to release their pictures because there was no crowd at the theatres.
Whereas the Marathi and South Indian film industries successfully built a space for themselves in regional cinemas, the Assamese film industry failed to keep up with the changing world of marketing.
Then came actor-singer Zubeen Garg’s ‘Mission China.’ Garg knows how to create a buzz among the youth in the same way that Bollywood does. To promote the film, Zubeen employed social media, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi supports. The ruse worked, and the generation’s heartthrob was able to entice people to the movies to see an Assamese film.

Except for Tezpur, Roopkoon’s Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, who had lost his cool, argued that the history of Assamese Bollywood would be incomplete. Jyoti Prasad was released from jail after serving 15 months of rigorous imprisonment after serving as the leader of all the Congress volunteers in the 1931-32 elections.
He established ‘Chitralekha Movietone’ in the spirit of establishing the Assamese film industry in Bholaguri Tea Garden, Kalangpur. Jaimati was released in 1935, despite the chitralekha Movietone to the progress of the film’s first presentation. Father Paramananda Agarwala and mother Kiranmoyee Agarwala died in the year 1934 in Jayamati.

There were no regular cinema theatres in Assam when Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala finished the first Assamese film, Joymoti, in 1935. He had to show his film in temporary auditoriums, schools, warehouses, and theatre halls. Only Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and possibly Shillong had temporary movie theatres. In the year 1937, Jyotiprasad built the first theatre, ‘Jonaki,’ expressly for the purpose of exhibiting films on a regular basis.
Jonaki Cinema, Jyoti Prasad was able to create ‘Jayamati’ on a shoestring budget. Despite the fact that he did not have the basic facilities to make movies in Assam. Jaimati’s film hurt him and in 1939 at a very low cost. He made a social film called ‘Indramalati’ which contributed to the history of the Assamese film industry. Jyoti Prasad spent about Rs 50,000.00 on the film Jayamati and in return, the cinema raised less than half. However, the cost in Indramalati is Rs. 15,000.00 Jyoti Prasad himself was the director of both Bollywood films.

“If Assamese do not make Assamese films, Assamese will not be secured,” Jyoti Prasad says. If not, then twice a day, foreign films will show the beauty of the language in the light of the culture of foreign civilization in front of Assamese. Especially in the minds of the young lads of the school and college, in a short period of time, foreign civilizations, cultures, etc. will be multiplied and they will soon be conquered.
Inspired by this great cautionary tale of Jyoti Prasad, Jyoti’s followers in Assam, all the artists interested in the Bollywood film industry are still trying their best. All of them are moving forward with the desire to give the best place to Assamese films in the world of Bollywood.

Jonaki Cinema, After Jyoti Prasad’s death, two collaborators Natsurya Fani Sharma and Kalaguru Vishnuprasad Rava tried to revive Bollywood filmmaking Tezpur. Fani Sharma and Vishnuprasad Ravai co-directed and directed the Bollywood version of Lakshidhar Sharma’s “Shiraj” in 1948. Bishnuprasad Rava took charge of the music.
Inspired by the ideals of Jyoti-Vishnu Fani at that time, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika made his debut in the Bollywood world. Directed the music under the direction of Fani Sharma in 1955 under the direction of Gamaprasad Agarwala.
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s solo and musical direction were released in 1956 with the Bollywood film “Era Bator Sur”. Fanisharma but did not stop. In 1956, Fanisharmai directed and produced the film ‘Dhumuha’ with music by Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. In 1959, when these two persons came forward again, another Bollywood film ‘Kechanson’ was released.

Jonaki Cinema, In the same year, the artist from Tezpur, though later promoted by Shaildhar Barua, a resident of Guwahati, made another film “Chaknaiya”. This story is music Directed by Mukul Baruah. After that, it was re-published “Puwoti Nixar Hopun” “xokuntola “etc. Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Vishnuprasad Rava, Fanisharma were the three who made Tezpur famous all over the world.
In 1989, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika rebuilt the Presidential Medal-winning Assamese Bollywood film “Pratidhwani”. Hazarika rebuilt “Chikmik Bijuli” in 1970 . This was followed by Prafulla Bara, a new generation of playwrights in Tezpur. He made a Bollywood film called “Baruwar Sansar”. The first Assamese color film “Bhaiti” was made in 1972.
This was followed by another Bollywood film, Ganesh, Chameli Memchab, Man Prajapati, Durani r Rang, etc. Various people from Tezpur were able to show their skills in these films. They are Ramen Baruah, Nip Baruah, Kamal Narayan Chowdhury, Ajit Singh, Sujit Singh, Nirod Chowdhury, Abdul Majid, Bhupen Wazir, Nipon Goswami, and others.
Bohagor Duporiya, the second film directed by Chanchwa Mahaliy was released in 1975. ‘Jetuka’ was released in 1969 under the management of Chandra Talukdar. All those who have made a name for themselves in the field of acting till the sixties. Vishnuprasad Rava, Fanisharma, Chandradhar Goswami, Tulsi Das, Ramen Sharma, Hiren Choudhury, Subarna Saikia, Rani Hazarika, Krishna Das Nath, etc…
Emerging managers of Tezpur, at the beginning of the last twenty-first century. Emerging Director of Tezpur Shantanu Mahanta and Alok Nath’s ‘Gun Gun Gane Gane’ and ‘Iman Morom Kio Lage’ continue to advance Tezpur’s reach to the Bollywood world. Arun Nath, Setona Das, Ubay Saikia, Kamini Baruah, Junu Baruah has been receiving rave reviews from countless audiences since then.
